Life Legacy
Charles Norman Powell, 86, of St. Marys, WV, passed away peacefully at his home on July 24, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born April 22, 1924 at Sylvan Mills, Pleasants County, WV, a first born son of the late Hal E. and Pearl V. Cunningham Powell. Charles joined the United States Navy on his 17th birthday, April 22, 1941. He was a World War II Veteran, serving as Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Cherokee. After giving 8 years of service to his country he left the Navy on his 25th birthday, April 22, 1949. One week later on April 29, 1949 he married his sweetheart, Claris Stewart Powell. They continued to be sweethearts for the next 61 years. Charles was retired from the Boilermakers Local Union #667 and Foster Wheeler, Inc., where he worked as a construction superintendent. He was a faithful member of the Cloverdale Church of Christ for 58 years, where he served as Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and Song Leader. He enjoyed coon hunting in his younger years, along with farming, gardening and traveling to Montana and the Dakotas. Reading Louis L’Amour books and other westerns were one of his hobbies. He always looked forward to deer season when he would hunt with his family and enjoyed each story of a grandson’s tale of the big chase. After his retirement he found great joy in his twice a month visits to the Amish Country of Charm, Baltic, and New Philadelphia, Ohio. There he would not go to the tourist attractions but sought out and found the best hidden places to buy and trade. He liked to attend the Mt. Hope, Ohio horse auctions.
Along with his wife Claris, he is survived by four children, Hal L. (Carmen) Powell of St. Marys, Jane Powell of St. Marys, Joyce (Brad) Statler of Belmont, WV, John (Tammy) Powell of St. Marys, eight grandchildren, Kate (Max) Grose of Spring Hill, TN, Matthew (Kathleen) Powell of Franklin, TN, Michael Powell of Huntington, WV, Josiah, Charles and Alex Powell of St. Marys, Sam (Cora) Statler of Crane, IN and Kari Statler of Belmont, WV, and three great-grandsons, Lucas Powell of Belmont, Tyler and Andrew Grose of Spring Hill, TN. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister, Dale (Dicie) Powell of Belmont, Wayne Powell of North East, MD, and Freda (Bill) Riggs of Williamstown, WV, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, David Charles Powell, grandson, Ben G. Powell, and sister, Mildred Smith.
Services will be held Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at 11 A. M. at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, WV with Dave Williamson officiating. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F.
